SMVD University Organizes National Science Day Specially Abled Persons

Faculty of Sciences in accordance with the guidelines of University Grants Commission, Govt. of India; celebrated National Science Day on 28th February, 2017 on the theme “Science and Technology for Specially Abled Persons”. It is a very worthy cause that UGC has chosen this theme for this year’s celebration on the Birth Anniversary of renowned Indian Physicist Sir. C.V. Raman. Science is for everyone and it is never ending. It is this pursuit that has excited young students to take up Science as a career leading to the advancements in technology that have greatly helped the differently abled persons to meet their daily needs. Thirty differently abled students of Red Cross Home for Disabled, Jammu; students of Higher Secondary Schools Panthal and Sira Colony participated in the celebrations. Under the able guidance of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SMVDU – Patron of the event that the Day was celebrated at the Matrika Auditorium, SMVD University on 28th February, 2017. The Chief Guest of the Inaugural Session was Maj Gen. (Retd.)Mr. S.K. Razdan, (Kirti Chakra Awardee) Gurgaon, who presented the Key Note Address correlating modern science with ancient Vedic literature and verses from great Indian poets like Kabir Das and Ravi Das. He listed out the reasons for lack of interest amongst students these days in studies due to many distractive activities. He stressed on the need for promotion of Science and Technology teaching and the role of teachers and mentors in shaping the careers of young students. The Introductory address was presented by Prof. V.K. Bhat, Dean Faculty of Sciences and Convener while Prof. V. Verma, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Co-Convener of the event presented the Valedictory Address. Dr. Sharada M. Potukuchi, Assoc. Prof., Department of Biotechnology and Organizing Secretary of the event presented the Vote of Thanks on the occasion. The Organizing Committee was supported by Faculty Members of various Departments of the University, Dr. Yugal Khajuria, Head, DoP; Dr. A.K. Das, Head, DoM; Dr. Kuldeep Raj, AP, DoM; Dr. Sandeep Bhougal, AP, DoM; Dr. Surrender Singh, AP, DoM; Dr. Ram Prakash, AP, DoP; Mr. Pankaj Biswas, AP, DoP; Dr. Rakesh Kumar, AP, DoBT; Mr. Swastik, AP, DoECE and Mr. Anuj Mahajan, AP, DoCSE. The Resource persons of Technical Sessions included Dr. Manish Kumar Varshney, Orthopedic Surgeon, SMVDNSH, Kakryal; Ms. Geeta Mehta, Scientist (Retd.), CSIR-IIIM, Jammu; Physiotherapist and a team of Expert medical practitioners from various branches – Dr. Pooja, Dr. Shelly, Dr. Gopika, Dr. Preeti from SMVDNSH, Kakryal. The specially abled students were very happy to be part of the event and appreciated the efforts of the University in sparing time out for educating and entertaining them with a short Cultural programme staged by the PG students of Maths, Physics, Biotechnology, Computer Sciences.
