TRAI conducts Telecom Consumer Outreach Programme at SMVDU

Katra, 26 Nov 2025: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), organised a Telecom Consumer Outreach Programme on the university campus to sensitise students, faculty, and staff members about telecom consumer rights and the available grievance-redressal mechanisms.

Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Pragati Kumar, highlighted the importance of such programmes in enhancing students’ industrial and technical awareness, particularly with respect to the functioning of regulatory bodies. He emphasised that more such workshops should be organised in the future with wider stakeholder participation, including industry and government agencies.

Prof. Balbir Singh, Dean of Academic Affairs, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and appreciated TRAI’s initiative in directly engaging with young consumers and addressing ground-level issues related to connectivity and service quality.

The technical session was led by Shri Rajesh Tripathi, Joint Advisor, and Shri Sushil Kumar Bansal, Senior Research Officer, from TRAI’s Regional Office, Delhi. Shri Tripathi outlined TRAI’s efforts to promote transparency and consumer protection in telecom services and encouraged participants to use TRAI’s mobile applications, such as MySpeed, MyCall, and DND, for monitoring service quality and reporting unsolicited communication.

The interactive programme saw active participation from representatives of all four major telecom service providers, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, Bharti Airtel Limited, and Vodafone Idea Limited, who interacted with the audience and responded to queries on network coverage, data speed, billing issues, SIM porting, KYC verification, and complaint procedures.

At SMVDU, the event was coordinated by the staff of Telecom Section and School of ECE, with support from the staff of School of Mathematics and School of Civil Engineering.

The event concluded with positive feedback from the participants, who welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with TRAI officials and telecom operators, noting that such initiatives significantly strengthen consumer awareness and service accountability in the region.
