SMVDU Civil Engineering Team Secures National Recognition with Second Prize at TECH EXPO 2026

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) marked a proud moment as its Civil Engineering  team secured the Second Prize at the prestigious TECH-EXPO 2026, organised by Pravara Rural  Engineering College, Loni, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Council  and the International Society of Automation. The national-level competition witnessed participation  from leading institutions across the country, highlighting innovation and technical excellence.

The award-winning project, titled “Design of Eco-Friendly Bricks Using Paper and Plastic Waste,”  was developed by students Rishabh Kumar, Samaira Sinha, Shubham Kumar Singh, and Hitesh  Bhakhri. Competing in Track-III (Smart Manufacturing, Robotics, and Infrastructure Systems), the  team demonstrated an innovative approach to converting non-recyclable waste into durable  construction materials. Their project not only earned them a cash prize of 4000 but also gained  recognition for its potential contribution to sustainable infrastructure and waste management.

A key figure behind this success is Dr. Vaibhav Sapkal, Assistant Professor at SMVDU, whose  visionary mentorship played a pivotal role. He guided the students from conceptualisation to  execution, ensuring technical and innovation at every stage. The students credited Dr. Sapkal for his  constant support and expert direction, while he, in turn, acknowledged the team’s dedication and  hard work. His focus on green technology and sustainable engineering was instrumental in shaping  the project into a nationally recognised innovation.

The project reflects a forward-looking approach to green infrastructure by offering a cost-effective  and environmentally sustainable alternative for construction. By transforming paper and plastic  waste into usable bricks, the team has presented a scalable solution addressing both waste  management challenges and affordable housing needs. The achievement was lauded by the Head of  the Department, Dr. V. K. Dogra, who appreciated the efforts of the students and the leadership of  Dr. Sapkal in bringing national acclaim to the university
