The NSS Unit of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) recently held an intensive first aid training session, conducted by Ms. Sushma Kumari and Ms. Preeti from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing (SMVDCoN) along with their students. The session aimed to equip students with practical skills to respond confidently in emergencies, combining hands-on demonstrations.
Participants were trained to handle a wide range of emergencies, including burns, drowning, snake bites, dog bites, nosebleeds, cardiac incidents, and fractures. Trainers explained the types of burns—first-degree (redness and mild pain), second-degree (blisters and swelling), and third-degree (deep tissue damage)—and demonstrated correct first aid for each. Techniques for managing fractures, including safe handling of injured limbs, were also taught.
Students practiced CPR and chest compressions, as well as assisted breathing using a roll to deliver air safely without mouth-to-mouth contact, reducing the risk of germs or infection. They were also shown how to control bleeding, treat bites, and respond to emergencies effectively until professional help arrives. The session reinforced the timeless principle that “prevention is better than cure,” underlining the importance of safety awareness, preparedness, and timely response.
The trainers emphasized the importance of having first aid kits suited to different environments. A small kit for cars or personal use is useful for minor injuries, a medium kit for homes or offices can handle common household accidents, and a large kit for hospitals or public events contains supplies for serious emergencies.
The training concluded with a strong message — that a little knowledge and presence of mind can make the biggest difference between panic and protection, between fear and saving a life. The session showed the true spirit of the National Service Scheme, encouraging students to help others with care and responsibility. The NSS Unit of SMVDU continues to guide students to be prepared and ready to serve society whenever needed. NSS programme coordinator Dr. Rajiv Kumar thanked SMVDCoN team for organizing the session.
