Week Long Skill Development Program on 3D Printing Concludes at SMVDU

Technology Innovation Hub, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) hosted a comprehensive 5-day workshop on “3D printing and new product development”, funded by Higher Education Department, Govt of UT of J&K,  which commenced with an inauguration program on the 5th of February chaired by  VC SMVDU Prof. Dr. Pragati Kumar. With Dr. K.R. Jha from the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) serving as the coordinator, Dr. Sanjay Mohan, Dr. Mir Irfan Ul Haq, Dr. Ankush Raina, and as the co-coordinators the program offered a diverse content delivered by experts from academia and industry.

The first day of the workshop featured enlightening lectures. In the morning sessions, Dr. S. Anand Kumar from IIT Jammu discussed “Embracing 3D Printing to Contribute to the Goals of Make in India, Make for the World.” The afternoon session featured Dr. Ravi Pratap from NIT Kurukshetra, who delved into the “Evolution of 4D Printing from 3D Printing of Polymeric Materials.” Additionally, Dr. Narendra Kumar from NIT Jalandhar enlightened participants on “Open Source Softwares for 3D Printing.”

On the second day, Dr. Ankush Raina from SMVDU, Katra, unraveled the “3D Printing Technology: Fundamentals and Applications” during the morning session. Simultaneously, Dr. S. Shiva from IIT Jammu delved into “The Art of Wire Arc Direct Energy Deposition – Fundamentals to Applications.” Lab sessions by experts from industry were scheduled for the afternoons of 2nd , 3rd and 4th day.Day 3 featured Dr. Mir Irfan Ul Haq from SMVDU, Katra, exploring “Unleashing the Potential of 3D Printing in New Product Development,” while Dr. Sanjay Mohan from SMVDU, Katra, shared insights.The fourth day kicked off with Dr. Ankush Anand from SMVDU, Katra, discussing “Sustainability and 3D Printing” in the morning. Simultaneously, Dr. Varun Sharma from IIT Roorkee focused on “Additive Manufacturing Techniques for Product Development.”

The fifth and final day brought in experts like Dr. Vishal Francis from LPU, Jalandhar, and Prof. Abid Haleem from Jamia Millia Islamia, exploring the role of additive manufacturing towards sustainability. The afternoon witnessed the valedictory session, featuring Chief Guest Ajay Kumar Sharma, JKAS, Registrar SMVDU, Guest of Honor Prof. Abid Haleem(JMI, New Delhi), and Prof. Balbir Singh, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. R.K. Mishra, Dean Student Welfare, and Prof. Eshwaramurthy, HOD (Mechanical Department), Mr. B.K. Bhatia, TPO SMVDU, faculty members of school of Mechanical Engineering, and the other co-coordinators of the project. Ajay Kumar Sharma, JKAS, Registrar SMVDU expressed his satisfaction over the successful conduct of the event and congratulated the participants and the organizers. Prof. Balbir Singh (Dean Academic Affairs,SMVDU) stressed for the need of conducting such skill based programs more frequently so as to make the youth of J&K future ready. A cultural program by the students of SMVDU was also part of the valedictory function.  

Dr. Mir Irfan Ul Haq (Co-Coordinator) presented a detailed report of the program during the valedictory, session while the participants from different institutes of J&K shared their feedback with the organizers. Dr. Sanjay Mohan(Co-Coordinator) delivered the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to JK Higher Education Department(Govt. of JK), SMVDU administration, Guest House staff, volunteers and all staff members involved in the activity.
