Prof. Chakrabarti delivers special lecture on Human Rights

SMVDU Katra: Prof. Kisor K. Chakrabarti, Adjunct Faculty, School of Philosophy & Culture (SoPC), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University delivered a special lecture on “Human Rights, Ethics and Spirituality: A Perspective from India”. In this, the notion and conception of human rights in ancient India was explained and discussed. He refuted the claim that the notion of human rights originated in the west. This he proved through numerous entries found in Vedas and Samhitas. Human rights are included in certain duties along with good and bad dispositions. It is also included in tolerance and religious freedom.

He further traced the notion of right to equality in Bhagwadgita, Position of Women in Manusmriti, Fairness of War in Mahabharata and Human Rights in rock edicts of Emperor Ashoka. The event was jointly organized by Department of Philosophy & Culture as well as NSS at SMVD University and was coordinated by Dr. Varun K. Tripathi Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Mr. Sumanta S. Sharma, Faculty Coordinator NSS. Dr. Anil K. Tewari, Dr. Madhu M. Chaturvedi and Dr. Ashoka K. Tarai, Asst. Professors in the School of Philosophy & Culture were also present on the occasion. Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjeev Jain congratulated the faculty members for organizing the lecture.
