With an aim to develop awareness about the Intellectual Property Right (IPR) among the students and faculty members, a one-day program on “Intellectual Property Literacy and Awareness”, was organized under Azadi ka Amrut Mahaotsav at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University by the Research & Development Section SMVDU and Intellectual Property Management Standing Committee in collaboration with AICTE-MIC, Government of India and under the aegis of Kalam Program for Intellectual Property Literacy and Awareness Campaign (KAPILA), Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks and Institution Innovation Cell, SMVDU.
SMVDU was selected among the 75 such centers in the country where the awareness campaign was carried out. Dr. D. Usha Rao, Assistant Controller of Patents and Design, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, delivered an expert lecture, giving practical insights about the issue pertaining to patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret. Dr. Rao explained the need for protecting the intellectual property drawing on the examples like yoga, Basmati Rice, Haldi, etc. for which patents had been sought by the western world. She provided details on the process of filing for patents and the various stages of the patenting process.
Prof. Ravindra K. Sinha, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU shared his experiences about the importance of intellectual property and its protection and the efforts made at the university to promote innovation and intellectual property. He shared that more than 18 patents have already been filed by the students and faculty members of the university and a very supportive ecosystem has been created at SMVDU to promote innovation and ease the process for filing for patents.
More than 250 participants which includes faculty, research scholars and post graduate students from the various schools of SMVDU, participated in the event and took a small quiz by Dr. Rao. Dr. Suparn Kumar Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Management, SMVDU and IIC coordinator for IPR activities delivered the welcome address and Dr. Vineet Veer Tyagi, Associate Dean (R&D) presented the vote of thanks. Dr. Sumeet Gupta, Dean (R&D) and Dr. Yatheshth Anand, Nodal Officer, IPMSEC organized the event.
