Students of School of Civil Engineering, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, visited High Speed Rail (HSR) Institute,its Project site, and Statue of Unity at Vadodara. They also visited landfill site with waste management facility, and plastic waste & biomedical waste treatment facility at Surat, Gujarat.The trip aimed to make students familiar about the India’s first high speed rail project (Bullet Train) and the functioning of High-Speed Rail Institute. Also, they learned about the role of engineering to construct the Statue of Unity, and to create awareness of various waste management systems especially biomedical waste management and plastic waste managements. Projects provided the practical education about the HSR Railway Station, Pile Foundation, girder casting and launching, Ballast Less Track (BLT), and landfill, waste management, and environment protections project planning, designing, construction, and maintenance procedure and its practices.

The trip was organized by Dr. V.K. Dogra (Head, SoCE) in which fifty students took part. The visit was coordinated and assisted by the faculty members and staff to School of Civil Engineering, including Mr. Ponnurangam P, Dr. Rahul Sharma, Dr. Bharat Bhushan Jindal, Mr. Ankur Tyagi and Mr. Love Sharma.Colonel SS Kapur, Principal, Mr.Anupam Awasthi, Dy. CPM-Civil, Mr.Jai Singh, Dy. CPM-Civil, Mr. Abodh Kumar, Dy. CPM-Civil, Mr.Anoop Khare, DGM-Civil, Mr. Gaurav Srivastava, DGM-Civil officers from High Speed Rail Institute Vadodara, Mr. Abbas Pathan and the Surat Municipal Corporation officers coordinated the visit and made necessary arrangements. The trip was a roaring success and help students learn beyond the boundaries of books.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing (SMVDCoN) in collaboration with Internal Complaint Committee (ICC), SMVD University celebrated international day for eliminating violence against women on 25 November, 2022 to make aware stakeholders on gender equality, harmony and safety at work place. Dr. Jyoti Sharma, Head, School of Business, SMVDU, delivered a lecture on “Sexual Harassment: Insight and Abatement”. She explained the guidelines of ICC, and steps involved in deliberation of a case under sexual harassment. The information regarding apprehension for gender equality, safety, misconceptions of sexual harassment through interactive case were also highlighted in the lecture. At the onset, Dr. Sharada Potukuchi, Presiding Officer, ICC, SMVDU welcomed all participants, and Dr. Ratna Chandra, Head, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU presided over as the guest of honour. The event was coordinated by Ms. Babitha Devu, SMVDCoN, Dr. Shailla Cannie, Principal, SMVDoN, and Dr. Sunanda, Member, ICC, SMVDU.

Prof. Tej K Pandita Centre from Genomics and Precision Medicine, Texas A&M College of Medicine, Houston, USA, delivered an invited lecture on Chromatin Modifying Factors in DNA Damage Repair in the School of Biotechnology, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. The lecture was attended by the faculty, scientists, research scholars and students of SMVDU. Prof. Tej Pandita interacted with the research scholars, faculty and showed a lot of interest in the research work being carried out in the School of Biotechnology, SMVDU. Prof. Pandita's research is to understand the mechanistic role of chromatin structure in regulating cell survival response to ionizing radiation and chemical-induced DNA damage. Dr. Ratna Chandra, Head, School of Biotechnology, laid emphasis on special lectures which are important in raising the level of science in the University. Prof. Pandita appreciated the efforts of SMVDU administration for establishment for such a vibrant department for research in biosciences. He laid emphasis on international collaboration. Head, SoBT along with other faculty members presented him with a memento and Dr. Rakesh Kumar, PI ICMR-CAR, and coordinator of the event presented the vote of thanks.

30112022 donation2NSS Unit of SMVDU organised a donation drive of old clothes and toys on campus. Old clothes and toys were collected from the employees and students of the university and distributed to the workers and small children of construction workers in the campus. The clothes were first segregated according to their size and then the needy people were allowed to choose as per their need. Many male and female workers along with their small children benefited from this donation drive. The event was conducted by the NSS volunteers under the guidance of Dr. Rajiv kumar, NSS Programme Coordinator of University. Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, Prof. R.K. Sinha appreciated the efforts of the NSS team.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University faculty and research scholars participated and presented their research work at national conference on Environmental and Industrial Biotechnology (NCEIB-2022) organised by the Department of Biotechnology, Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology for Handicapped, Kanpur, U.P.; wherein the oral presentation delivered by Ms. Mahima Sharma, Ph.D. Scholar of School of Biotechnology, SMVDU, was selected for the Uma Shukla Award for best paper presentation sponsored by the Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability.

Ms. Mahima, mentored by Dr. Sharada Potukuchi, Faculty, SMVDU, presented a part of her research work titled ‘Studies on Microbial Diversity and Antimicrobial Activity of Endophytic Bacteria Sourced from Cordia dichotoma' published in the Journal Frontiers in Microbiology earlier this year. The paper explains how diverse endophytic bacteria can serve a role in natural product drug-discovery for novel anti-microbials to combat the multi drug resistant infections and their metabolites. Dr.  Sharda presented a lecture on Vitro Manipulation for Production of Plant Secondary Metabolites; Mr. Amit Kumar Choudhary, Ph.D. Scholar, Biotechnology made a poster presentation on “Importance and Conservation of Critically Endangered Medicinal Flora in Kashmir Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot, Jammu and Kashmir”. Prof. R.K. Sinha, VC, SMVDU and Dr. Ratna Chandra, Head, School of Biotechnology congratulated Ms. Mahima for her accomplishments and the research team.

Researchers of Molecular Biology Lab, School of Biotechnology, SMVD University organised an awareness campaign on “World Antimicrobial Awareness Week-2022” as part of awareness initiative taken by WHO to combat antimicrobial resistance. The weeklong activities at SMVDU kicked off on Friday 18th November with an informative talk on “How to Prevent AMR” delivered by Dr. Shafaq Rasool. Other activities were planned by researchers of Molecular Biology Lab, in which Rabiya Tabbassum, Mansavi Bhardwaj and Swadha Kailoo educated people about the misuse of antibiotics.An awareness lecture was delivered by Dr. Shafaq Rasool on “Understanding and Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance” to the students and staff members of DPS-Katra on 23 November 2022. Sh. Amit Bhasin, JKPS SSP Katra, also attended this session and found this lecture quite interesting. Also, Dr. Rasool delivered a talk on the “Misuse of Antibiotics” at the Government High School-Sirah-Kakryal on 24th November, 2022.A talk by Dr. Avisek Mahapa, Senior Scientist, Infectious Diseases Division CSIR-IIIM Jammu was planned for the students of School of Biotechnology on the 24th November, 2022. An informative talk on “Antimicrobial Resistant: Past, Present & Future” was delivered by the expert to make students understand the impact of antimicrobial resistance in treating these bacterial infections.A week-long survey was also conducted in the form of a questionnaire to understand the awareness of people regarding antibiotics. Dr. Shafaq Rasool, Coordinator, thanked Microbiologists Society India (MSI) especially Prof. Arvind Deshmukh President MSI. She also expressed her thanks to SMVDU adminstration for making this event a success.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University organized an expert lecture on image building in which students, faculty members and research scholars participated. The event was coordinated by the Office of Academic Affairs, SMVDU.Two experts Sonia Dubey and Minoo Titina from the Indian School of Image Management, Mumbai, deliberated on the topics, like pre-placement activities, strategies for image building, and strategic planning. The speakers said that the process of establishing an identity depends upon two things: how you see yourself and how others see you.Students and researchers raised their doubts in Q&A session. Vikalp SMVDU, aiming towards the students’ welfare, has been working to provide education to all the children coming from villages, namely Sira, Dheerti, Sool, Kakryal, and Jhajjar. This timeVikalp celebrated its 13th children’s day last week, where Prof. R.K.Sinha, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU was invited as the chief guest of the event and other faculty member were there as guests of honour.The celebration commenced with a brief introduction about children’s day. The guests were greeted with a warm welcome and a poem titled “Mai Bhi Vikalp Jaaungi” was recited by the students of Vikalp showing their devotion towards vikalp. This year’s theme “Vikalp Mania” filled everyone with splendour, rush and excitement. The performances were well synchronized with the theme starting with toddlers dancing on the tunes of “Ek Zindagi Meri” expressing their emotions about their dreams and passion. For some fun banter, the next performance was a group song titled “Hanikarak Bapu ” sung with great innocence. A prize distribution ceremony awarding all those who performed well was conducted after the celebration. Prof. R.K.Sinha delivered an inspiring speech to the young builders of our nation. He encouraged everyone to work hard and talked about the change we all can bring together as a community to treat every person irrespective of their background, section or class. To bring an end to this wonderful evening, a special vote of thanks by Shri Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Faculty Coordinator of Vikalp. He appreciated all the volunteers and the children of Vikalp for their efforts to make this event a success. Vikalp expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, involved in making this celebration a successful and memorable event.

08112022 placementTraining and Placement Cell of the School of Civil Engineering, SMVD University, organized a seminar for B Tech students about the opportunities for placement and higher education in foreign countries in which Er. Abhishek Tyagi, a cyber security expert working with Australian Retirement Trust, Queensland Govt. Super, Brisbane, delivered a talk. The speaker emphasized ‘thinking out of the box’ approach, which the participants received well. The budding engineers interacted with the speaker and clarified their doubts. The expert motivated the students to enhance their skills for industrial acceptability. He also focussed on personality development, technical skills, and soft skills required to apply in foreign companies and higher education avenues. The participants enthusiastically interacted with the speaker during the Q&A session.The talk was organised by Dr. Bharat Bhushan Jindal, Mr. Ankur Tyagi and Dr. Balbir Pandey, Faculty, School of Civil Engineering, SMVDU. Dr. V.K. Dogra, Head of the School, thanked the speaker. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Mr. Srijan.

NSS SMVDU organised a self-defence workshop for girls on campus. Girls were trained for different moves and techniques they could adopt under challenging situations. The event started with basic warmup exercises like stretching which was followed by other self-defence techniques. Girls students participated actively in the event and performed the techniques taught to them with great interest. Ritwik Mishra and Kumar Raushan from the final year conducted the session, and both are well-trained for this skill. Dr. Rajiv Kumar, the NSS Programme coordinator of the University appreciated the efforts of volunteers.

K. Sinha, VC, SMVDU, Dr. Anju Sharma In-charge Medical Officer and her team (Dr. Monika, Mr. Rishi Kumar, Mr. Kundan Vijay, Mr. Avdesh Gupta, Dr. Gurpreet, Ms. Amanpreet, Mr. Vijay, Mr. Vinod, Mr. Manish, Mrs. Basanti, Mr. Surinder, Mr. Jaswant, Ms. Tripta, Mr. Sohan and Mr. Darshan). The drive successfully vaccinated 416 people. This mega vaccination drive could be possible with the sincere support of Dr. Gopal Dutt, BMO Katra and his team: Ms Indu Bala, Ms. Usha Rani (CHC Katra) and Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Program Co-ordinator NSS. National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of SMVD University organised an awareness programme, titled "Know your Constitution." The event was organized to make students aware about Indian Constitution. The NSS volunteers organised a quiz game in which university students participated and showed their enthusiasm to know about the constitution of our country. The students discussed the Preamble, Fundamental Rights and Duties. The event was successful under the guidance of NSS Programme Cordinator, Dr. Rajiv Kumar with the coordination of NSS volunteers.

The event was a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and to aware youth about the drug abuse. 40 students participated in the competition and gave the message of "Say No to Drugs" through their beautiful creative paintings. Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University celebrated the ongoing World Heritage Week at Mubarak Mandi, the royal residence of erstwhile Dogra Rulers of Jammu and Kashmir.

Padma Shri Prof. R.K. Sinha, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

Under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and the initiative of Pradeep Kumar, IAS, Director, Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K, the students and faculty of SMVDU visited the Dogra Art Museum to explore and learn about armoury, schools of miniature paintings, manuscripts, jewellery, coins, handicrafts and handlooms of the glorious history of J&K. The royal exhibits of art intrigued them.

It was followed by a Heritage Baithak, which had eminent speakers including Prof RK Sinha and Dr Lalit Gupta, discussing heritage, particularly of Jammu region, in varying contexts and establish a conscious community. In his key note lecture on the occasion, Prof. Sinha emphasized the need of appreciating the heritage of India and exhorted the students to develop keen interest in the rich heritage and culture. "Interestingly, Jammu region has antiquities from Harappan civilisation, Kushan to the present Dogra rulers," he added.

Prof Sinha appreciated the efforts of the Department of Archives Archaeology and Museums, J&K for providing the opportunity to the students for learning about the rich heritage of the Jammu region.

Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Registrar SMVDU, also laid emphasis on the propagation of information about culture and heritage, and their conservation. Dr Sangeeta Sharma, Assistant Director, and Mukul Magotra, Curator, Dogra Art Museum guided the students and guests as they toured the royal complex. "Terracotta heads of Ambaran , sculptures of Akhnoor, Basohli, Purmandal, Ghora Gali showcase our rich heritage and craftsmanship," said Dr Sangeeta.The participants evinced great interest in the Basholi miniature paintings whose significance and intricacies were explained by Mukul Magotra. Dr Sangeeta added, "In addition to the event with SMVDU today, there's an ongoing special exhibition in the Dogra Art Museum to commemorate World Heritage Week. It is being thronged by academicians, heritage enthusiasts, and art lovers." The scintillating folk performance by Ram Ditta and party in the central park of the royal complex inspired the audience with a new zeal and love for their intangible cultural heritage.

Celebrated all over the world from 19th to 25th November every year, World Heritage Week aims to raise awareness about the significance of heritage and encourage preservation and promotion of both tangible and intangible heritage of the country.

04112022newsAkash Srivastava of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, received the Shreshth UP Ratna Awardfor his research and innovation. He was an alumnus of the B Tech (2014-2017) mechanical batch. He received this honour on 30 October in the Shresth UP program of UP Development Foundation in Lucknow in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Shri Brajesh Pathak, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Keshav Prasad Maurya, Deoria MP Shri Ramapati Ram Tripathi and Cabinet Minister Shri Dharamvir Prajapati. In addition, Akash Srivastava has 29 patents, 19 design patents and 11 research papers. He is currently serving as a Chief Technology Officer at Flydex Automobiles Pvt Ltd, a startup funded by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Technology Business Incubation Center.In this program, about 36 people from across the Indian states have been honoured for social service, environment, education, research, sports, medicine, media, literature, cinema etc. The program was conducted by Shri Chandra Bhushan Pandey, Independent Director, National Chemical Factory. On this occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, while addressing the gathering, sent best wishes for the future to all the awardees and asked them to continue working for society and the state.

National Service Scheme, (NSS) SMVDU organised Breast Cancer Awareness Program on campus. NSS volunteers discussed with housekeeping and security women of university that how to detect breast cancer and also explained them how they can prevent it by regular check-ups and proper care. Causes of breast cancer were also informed and at what age they should get their checkup, and its symptoms of breast cancer. Every woman needs to maintain a healthy weight, eat more vegetables, etc. This programme was successfully conducted by the NSS Volunteers under the guidance of NSS Programme Coordinator, Dr Rajiv Kumar. Vice chancellor, SMVDU, Prof. R. K. Sinha appreciated the efforts of team NSS.
