National Level Training Program for IFS Officers Successfully Concludes

The One-week long training program on ‘Creating Sustainable and Motivated Organization’ for Indian Forest Services Officers at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University concluded successfully. Considering the role of motivation as additive fuel that increases the efficiency of the organization to attain its peak and help in the optimum utilization of resources, this training program was aimed to implant the major ingredients among the employees who acts as conduit with the organization on the way of creating the motivated organization. The programme was organized by School of Business, Faculty of Management with the financial support from Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India from 21st -26th November, 2016. The Twenty Five IFS officers of the program from different parts of the India including Gujrat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, J&K, Assam etc. attended and participated in this prestigious event.

Earlier during the event, a brain storming panel discussion session on ‘Improvement in the Working of Forests Department Need for Career Development through Training and Improvement of Skills’ was conducted on the concluded day. The panelist concluded the discussion with consensus that Government of India should also conduct such kind of compulsory training programme for field staff of Indian Forest Services. Moreover, in order to increase their familiarity with the technological changes taking place, more contents relating to technology up-gradation are useful in the training programs of IFS officers. They, further, mentioned that funding and allocation of such kind of training program should be increased by Government of India.

During the valedictory ceremony, Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU and Chief Guest of the valedictory ceremony acknowledged the hard and sincere efforts put by School of Business in organizing of such kind of training programs. Prof Jain also praised the efforts made the School of Business. Dr. M.K. Kumar, Additional CEO, SMVDSB, Guest of Honour of the valedictory ceremony appreciated the attempts made by SMVDU in the conduct of such kind of training program regularly and congratulated the organizing team for successful conduction of the event once again. Lately, Dr Supran Kumar Sharma, Organizing Secretary of the event applauded the contribution of the participants and supporting team in the successful conduction of the event.During this five days event, a field visit to the central office SHMVD Shrine Board, Katra was also made wherein Mr. Ajit Sahu, CEO, SMVD Shrine Board apprised the officers regarding the various aspects, functioning and efforts being made by the board and participants appreciated the efforts the board.

The training programme comprised of various interactive sessions on the basis of case study, role plays, group discussions braining storming etc. were taken by esteemed resource persons including Major General (Retd.) N.K.Dhir, Prof. W.C.Singh, Dr. Ashok Bhan, etc. besides in-house resource persons of School of Business, SMVDU.

 
Workshop on Film-Making Organized

SMVDU, Katra: A three-day workshop on film-making was conducted at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University from 25 to 27 November. The workshop was organizing keeping in view the need for imparting the basic cinematographic skills among students as one of the basic skills for any technical graduate today. The main instructor Mr. Tripurari Nath Tiwari – a freelance cinematographer from Delhi and his team comprising of Mr. Govind Kumar Singh and Mr. Mithun Kumar laid their emphasis on converting concepts into script, technical aspects of shooting, cinematographic skills, editing and use of editing software, basic lighting techniques and adding music to films etc. The participating students in the workshop were divided into three groups each comprising six students and they were assigned shooting on the ideas created and discussed in the training sessions. The teams worked throughout days and nights and the eagerness for learning among students was seen at its peak.

The instructors also sensitized students about the career opportunities in film-making in numerous fields such as event coverage, event campaigns, film-making for social cause, audio-visual content production, product promotion, advertisement designing, e-learning videos and academic content designing for online audio-visual learning etc. Apart from these fields, there is enormous scope in TV programs, YouTube channel, news channels, film-making for social media etc. During the workshop, films already made by students were also screened. The workshop concluded on 27th November evening. Dr. V. K. Tripathi, President Board of Cultural Activities thanked the instructors and participating students. He also thanked the Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjeev Jain for his wholehearted support for such programs that impart skills among students. It was resolved that regular follow-up sessions will be conducted at students’ level at regular intervals.

 
Theater workshop concludes at SMVDU

SMVDU Katra: A Ten-Day Workshop on Theater Art was organized by the Board of Cultural Activities in collaboration with a noted theater group - Anukriti Rangmandal from Kanpur, held from 13-22 November 2016, during 7.00 - 8.30 am in the morning and 6.00 - 8.30 pm in the evening. Before starting the workshop the Anukriti presented 2 theaters namely ‘Jaanch-Padtal’ and ‘Purush’ in Matrika Auditorium. The workshop was attended by 35 students from the University and some kids of the faculty and staff. The participants were introduced the basics of the theater art, understanding the script, script writing, plot, stage, light management, dialogues, costumes, use of music etc. The participants worked rigorously on 2 well known Hindi scripts namely ‘Aasadh Ka Ek Din’ of Mohan Rakesh and ‘Andher Nagari Chaupat Raja’ of Bharatendu Harishchand. Based upon the practice the participants gained adequate insights for designing and staging their own plays, skits and mimes.

The valedictory took place on 22 November at 8.30 AM in Matrika Auditorium. The president BCA Dr. V. K. Tripathi presented a vote of thanks and felicitated the resource persons. Mr. Shival Pandey was the student lead of the team. Rishab Raina and Shubham Upadhyaya helped in the workshop organization. The workshop ended with a resolution of weekly get together for follow up sessions.

 
Four Years Career Planning Workshop conducted under NSS

NSS at SMVDU conducted a workshop on Four Years Career Planning for First Year students of B.Tech. programme on November 16 2016 from 5:30 – 7.30pm in the Lecture Hall D. This event was split into two lectures. In the first lecture, Mr. Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Faculty Coordinator NSS, gave a talk on the academic component. In this, the importance of courses, SGPA, CGPA along with online courses were highlighted. It also dealt with how one should take and complete projects, acquire language and software skills and plan their summer training and internships. The final section of the talk emphasized the need to start planning early so as to avoid last minute rush. An informal question-answer session with some discussion followed the talk.

In the second lecture, Dr. Varun Kumar Tripathi, President Board of Cultural Activities delivered a lecture on the significance and relevance of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. In this, he highlighted the need and importance of these activities in our daily day-to-day life. He also informed students about the sports infrastructure, various events being conducted, student festivals and several students’ clubs operating in the university. It was also explained that how students may plan their involvement in these activities so as to benefit themselves. It was highlighted that how engagement with extra-curricular activities help in reduction of drop-out tendencies, depression and feeling of isolation. It also helps refraining from anti-social and criminal activities. Students’ queries were taken and addressed at the end of the session.

The event was attended by around 150 students from the departments of EEC, CSE, ME and IBT and was jointly coordinated by Mr. Ajit Kumar, Student Secretary NSS and Mr. Rajat Mishra, Student Secretary Vikalp.

 
Professor, Tej K Pandita from Houston Methodist, Texas, USA, Delivers a talk

Dr. Tej Pandita, Professor and Scientific Director Department of Radiation Oncology Houston Methodist, Texas USA visited SMVDU from 19th till 23rd of November2016. Dr. Pandita earned his Ph.D. in Cytogenetics from Panjab University in 1980. He held faculty appointments at Columbia University in New York, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas before becoming a member of the Houston Methodist Research Institute in 2014. As a member of the Cancer Research Program, he directs a research program focusing on DNA repair and radiotherapy.

Dr. Pandita was elected the Fellow of the American Association of Advancement of Science in 2013. He has also been a member of several NIH study sections and review boards. He is the past Chairman of A-T Workshop 2012 (ATW2012) International meeting. Dr. Pandita serves on the editorial board for the journals Cancer Research, Genomic Integrity, BMC Genomics, and served as a chartered member of the CMAD NIH Study Section. Dr. Pandita's research employs radiation genetics and biology to study the relationships between DNA sequence, chromatin structure and sensitivity to IR. The long-term goal of the research projects is to understand the mechanistic role of chromatin structure in regulating the cell survival response to IR-induced DNA damage. He delivered his talk on “DNA damage and Stem cells”.

Dr. V. Verma HoD Biotechnology, welcomed and introduced the guest. He was hosted by the department of Biotechnology, SMVDU and the talk was attended by scientists from IIIM, Jammu, Doctors from Narayana Health, faculty from SMVDCON, faculty and students from Department of Biotechnology, SMVDU. A great amount of interest was generated by his talk as was evident from the questioning session. Dr. Rakesh Kumar, accompanied him for the visit to the different research labs in department of Biotechnology and Dr. Pandita was very much impressed with the facilities of the department and complimented the university authorities for developing the infrastructure for research. He also interacted with the faculty and scholars of the department. He laid stress on finding the niche areas of research and particularly collaborative and inter-disciplinary research. He had long discussion regarding the work going in the laboratory of Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Assistant Professor in the department of Biotechnology and showed keen interest in collaboration and also suggested that MoU between the two institutes can be a future possibility. Dr. Rakesh, thanked Dr. Pandita for agreeing to visit SMVDU and also thanked his research scholar GR Bhat for making his visit successful.

 
One-Week National Level Training Programme for IFS Officers Inaugurated

‘It is never too late to be what you might have been”, with this aim One-Week Training Programme on ‘Creating Sustainable and Motivated Organization ‘for IFS Officers at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University inaugurated today. The programme is being organized by School of Business, Faculty of Management with the financial support from Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India from 21st -25th November, 2016. Mr. A.K.Singh, PCCF, J&K was the Guest of Honour of the inaugural ceremony. While addressing the officers, he discussed the golden history and development of forest affairs in J&K and the milestones achieved by the state in the forest areas. He also emphasized the relevance of such kind of training programme for the officers. .Appreciating the resources and scenic beauty of University he mentioned that University has made commendable efforts in organizing of such kind of training programme on a regular mode.

Earlier during the function, organizing secretary, Dr. Supran Kumar Sharma extended warm welcome to the participating IFS officers nominated by MoEF for training programme. While introducing the aim of the programme to the participants, he underlined that it will help in exploring and understanding the ways in which motivation can help the organization, especially the employees to act as conduit with the organization on the way of excellence. Prof. Sanjeev Jain also conveyed his best wishes for the programme. Prof. V.K.Bhat, Dean, Faculty of Management and Registrar, Mr. Ajay Khajuria congrulated the organizing team for the regular conduction of such kind of programmes at SMVDU. The training programme will comprise of various interactive sessions which will be taken by esteemed resource persons to highlight the development of building of willingness among employees to work which can help the organizations in securing best possible utilization of resources. One day field visit will also be the part of this one-week training programme. ANNUAL TECHNICAL FESTIVAL “TITIKSHA 2016” CONCLUDES

SMVDU Katra: The annual technical festival – Titiksha, which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Governor of J&K State Sh. N.N. Vohra, concluded at SMVDU on 20th of November 2016 at 05:00PM in the Matrika Auditorium. The festival witnessed more than 100 enthralling technical events like Chimera, Robo Disarmer, Robo Soccer, Forensics, etc.

The main highlights of the festival were Entrepreneurial Talks, organized through the events, to motivate SMVDU fraternity about entrepreneurship. Mr. Balaji Viswanathan, the most followed person on Quora in the World and CEO Invento Tech; Dr. Pawan Agrawal, the noted researcher on the Mumbai Dabbawallas and a Motivational Speaker and Mr. Ritesh Agarwal, CEO, Oyo Rooms shared their views with the Jam packed audience in the Matrika Auditorium.

During the festival, the 3rd International Conference on Recent Trends and Advancements in Engineering and Technology was also organized successfully in which papers from more than 5 different countries were presented.

Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sanjeev Jain conveyed his best wishes and congratulations to the hard work put in by the Team Titiksha. Dr. Rakesh Jha President, Board for Professional Activities presented the report on the activities conducted during the three days festival. The prizes for the Mega Events were given away by Dr. Yugal Khajuria [Dean of Students] and Dr. Varun K. Tripathi. SMVDU, Katra: Prof. N.K. Bansal, former Vice-Chancellor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), is visiting the University campus on the special request of the Faculty Forum of SMVDU from 17th – 18th Nov. 2016. He graciously interacted with the faculty and staff in the session organized under the title “SMVDU towards Excellence: The Role of Faculty”. He highlighted the need of excellent academic institutions given the incremental requirement of the youth of the country. He mentioned the contemporary challenges before the education system of India which was once the centre of great learning in the world with the Universities like Takshashila and Nalanda. He said that the dearth of good teachers, imbalance between teaching and research, lack of thrust for innovation are some of the challenges before India. He also remarked that we cannot afford being a socially and culturally divided community. The role of teachers is therefore of a great value in the present society. Teachers are required to not only impart factual knowledge to the students but also infuse and motivate the students for project-based learning. In order to inspire the students, the teachers must demonstrate a high moral character apart from having full commitment and constructive approach towards the profession. He encouraged the faculty and staff to strengthen solution-oriented mechanism and be open-minded towards interdisciplinary learning. Prof. Bansal remarked that SMVDU has a great potential to fill the gap of excellent institutions in the country especially in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. He also urged all the departments of the University to identify at least five topics of research in which they are going to engage themselves in near future. The focus of research should be to make original contributions to extend the horizon of knowledge rather than producing low quality works. He congratulated the incumbent Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain for bringing fresh winds to the campus and hoped that the University will grow exponentially under his leadership. Prof. V. Varma, Dean Faculty of Engineering felicitated Prof. Bansal. Dr. V. K. Tripathi, interim President Faculty Forum extended welcome and Dr. Kamni Pathania delivered Vote of Thanks. SMVDU, Katra: The Annual Technical Festival of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University – Titiksha and the 3rd International Conference on Recent Trends and Advancements in Engineering and Technology were inaugurated by Hon’ble Governor Sh. N. N. Vohra on 17th November at Matrika Auditorium. Titiksha – the Annual Technical Festival of the University provides a platform to students and participants of other institutions to exhibit their technical and innovative skills and to compete with each other to find out solutions for problems of our society. 32 Colleges and Institutions are taking part in the Festival including School students from Jammu region. The 3rd International Conference on Recent Trends and Advancements in Engineering and Technology is in receipt of papers from 7 different countries like Germany, Italy, UK etc., and institutions of repute from India like IITs. NITs, CSIR Labs etc. The conference will focus upon IOT, 5G, Robotics and Renewable Energy, Energy Harvesting, Genetics and Network and Information Security.

In the Inaugural Address, Governor Sh. N. N. Vohra called upon the faculty to allow students to discuss ideas. The academic institutions should be a place of contemplating ideas that can be put to practice. He expressed satisfaction a number of institutions are participating in the festival as well as in the conference. It is a good opportunity for students to learn; participants to exchange their ideas and suggestions. He also reminded of the PM’s initiative ‘Make in India’ as a force that can draw young minds towards entrepreneurship and to do new things in new ways. He also highlighted that the residential set up of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University gives the students an opportunity to do things together - to identify the problems of society and come up with possible solutions. He emphasised the need to focus much upon incubation, conservation of energy, conservation of water resources, utilisation of solar energy, protection of environment etc. The formal welcome was extended by Dr.Rakesh Kumar Jha, President Board of Professional Activities. The Vice Chancellor Dr.Sanjeev Jain in his address welcomed the delegates of the conference and wished success to the festival. Registrar Sh. Ajay Khajuria, Dean of Students Dr.Yugal Khajuria, Dean of various faculties, staff and students were present on the occasion. Prof. N. K. Bansal, former Vice Chancellor of SMVDU was the special guest on the occasion. The stage was conducted by Ms. Bisma Bilal and Vote of Thanks was delivered by Mr.Chaitanya, Secretary, Board of Professional Activities.

SMVDU,Titiksha 2K16 Kick-started with an unconventional event 'PLAYERS' hosted by School of Management ,where participants were excitingly biding.The bidders earning highest points in proportion to the amount invested will be declared winners.The Biotechnology department came up with some versatile events viz. 'Streax', requiring participants to showcase their drawing skills, 'Biobiz' ,which invited startup plans for Bio-tech industry and the mega event 'Forensics', which involves investigating crime scene based on the biological evidences.The Mech. boys were quite enthusiastic in presenting their events, 'Slingshot', event required the development of a canon Kind of mechanism to fire shots, the slingshot traveling the farthest takes the winning shot,'Udaan', students needed to make water propelled rocket and the winner was decided on the accuracy of the rocket to hit an area and there was one unique event which tested the thematic apperception , planning exercise and word association.Amid the ongoing exciting events the School of Electronics & Communication featuring events like 'Electromania', in which circuit solving skills were tested, 'Elcovision' where participants were needed to decipher the circuits based on the clues and components provided, and the day concluded with a thrilling event 'Catch me If you Can', participants had to run their bots on a provided track and chase the competitor's bot.The coders of the University ,School of Computer Science hosted events like 'Skull Crack','ConnectIt','EEE:Programming Lab', which checked the cognitive ,intuitive and programming skills of the students. The main attraction of the day was an Entrepreneurial Talk by Balaji Vishwanathan, he started with explaining how to set up a startup which basically involved contemplating the market demand and identifying the gaps and stuffing it with your innovative ideas.The overall session was interactive where he answered questions covering topics like U.S politics,the fate of Indian education system and gave a wonderful explanation on Time Management giving a reference of his college life.

Astronomy Club Formed at SMVDU, Organizes its first Event

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Fraternity members formulated an Astronomy Club, the first of its kind in the state of Jammu and Kashmir under the guidance of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor SMVD University. The purpose of the club is to bring together Sky walkers, share their passion and organize events and activities related to the field in SMVDU campus. It has been informed that more than 80 members, including faculty, staff and students have joined the club and are actively participating. Dr. Swarkar Sharma is the faculty coordinator of the club. The club initiated its activity by organizing an event for the SMVDU fraternity to watch appearance of Super Moon and partially that could be seen through out this week.

The club members are sharing their personal telescopes and presently have Orion SkyQuest XT10 Classic Dobsonian Telescope capable to explore deep sky objects like Nebulae, Galaxies, Star clusters etc.; Celestron C90 MAK and a 6/700 Reflector Telescope capable to help visualize Solar system objects like Planets and their Moons. In addition, members claimed that they have subscription to state of the art "Online Telescopes" located in USA and Europe that can control online over the Internet.
