The Department of Energy Management previously School of Infrastructure Technology & Resource Management was established in the year of 2005-2006. The objective of the Department to offer academic program and conduct research in the area of Energy, Renewable Energy and Environment related issue. Presently, the Department is running a full time M. Tech. program in Renewable Energy and Full/Part time Ph.D. Program in various areas. Department is well focused in the research work on Solar Energy (Thermal and Photovoltaics), Energy Storage, Exergy analysis of Refrigeration Systems, Exergy & Exergoeconomic analysis of Renewable Energy Systems, Phase Change Materials and Its Applications, Building simulation, chemical exergy, waste water treatment through renewable energy sources.

Manufacturing is the backbone of any industrialized society in today’s competitive world. Various Mechanical gadgets which are used in our day to day life activities are an outcome of manufacturing science and engineering. Mechanical Engineers are the driving force behind the design and evaluation of various systems. Mechanical Engineering in the current scenario not only revolves around the basic areas of Thermal Engineering, Knowledge of Automobiles, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems, Materials or Manufacturing Science, but has rather become an interdisciplinary horizon of vast knowledge with endless application areas. The students interested to learn Mechanical Systems are exposed to various courses designed with an objective to impart maximum practical based knowledge, to master these budding engineers to work under challenging environment.

Mechanical Engineering also involves an analysis of various energy related issues which include energy conversion, storage and utilization (engines and power plants, etc.). The present day engineering scenario also deals with the issues like design of environmental systems, recycling and disposability of materials, etc. During the entire pattern of this learning process, the mechanical engineering students are also trained on recently developed advanced technologies like non traditional machining systems, robotics and computer integrated manufacturing systems, etc.

The students trained through our Mechanical Engineering programme have successfully gained technical positions in various corporate and industrial houses, within and outside the country.

The School of Mechanical Engineering, in SMVDU came into existence in the year 2006, when the first batch started off with a total number of 45 candidates. The number today exceeds 230 which include B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D.

To Provide Architectural education to create environment friendly architecture through inputs from traditional skills, materials and geographical conditions; Expressing regional diversity through architecture and promoting research on materials, energy, depletion of resources, conservation of heritage.

To infuse confidence in the would-be-architect. In nutshell the Architect from the institute has to be made aware of the changing scene put forth by racing progress with its tools. Decadence in built-up-environment is a major concern. To feel concerned for the up gradation of the built-up-environment is the need of the hour.

An idea to start a school of Architecture came up in the year 2005-06 keeping in view that:

The state has no Department of Architecture. The state is blessed with three distinct regions. Overall Development activity is on the increase. The development in hills is not organized and landscape is getting mutilated. The number of architects in totality is not much in relation to population. The areas of the state are prone to earthquake as the state falls in seismic zone IV. Elements of heritage are getting diluted. Any school of Architecture can be a catalyst in promoting architectural order. The aim of the department would be to create consciousness regarding Architecture, Environment, Built-up form, proper utilization of materials, and resources retaining heritage elements and lastly promoting sustainable development in hills.

By combining the subjects of the course in a natural flow, the architect- to be shall have confidence in planning, architectural design, drafting details and shall be ready for discussion. In other words it will make architecture truly a language of' heart than a language of becoming an architect. Form-Function, both in the interiors and exteriors and the relationship of structure with the site and location (HARMONY) in truthfulness shall be the theme of the course. With this approach in mind the architects from the institute shall be ready to face challenges in the field of Architecture. Programs in the Preamble are realized through practical approaches like field studies and special lectures.

Field studies help students to understand human activities, behavior and the value of space inside and outside and the details to be incorporated in Design.

The Department of Architecture & Landscape Design (DA&LD) started in 2006 with the first batch of 40 students. The first three years of the department were spent on shared basis in the buildings of other UG & PG schools of the University. Meanwhile, DA&LD faculty consider themselves fortunate to have got the job of designing the DA&LD building under the leadership of First Director of the School Prof. C.L.Razdan. the beautiful design of the building with passionate learning environment was soon ready on paper & the building was ultimately inaugurated on 4th dec, 20009 by the Chancellor SMVDU & hon’ble Governor of J&K sh. N.N.Vohra in presence of First lady of J&K Smt. Usha Vohra, then Vice-Chancellor SMVDU prof. N.K.Bansal , then Director DA&LD Prof. C.L.Razdan & faculty members of DA&LD.

So far 04 batches totaling nearly 145 students have passed out after underwent studies for B.Arch. course here in DA&LD, SMVDU & are well settled in parts of the Globe including Reputed abroad Universities. School is affiliated through mandatory Council of Architecture, COA New Delhi & for the purpose, regular inspections & approval are deliberated through COA. Lately, in may-2014, DA&LD has undergone through rigorous inspection for the extension of the approval of admissions for future batches as s the routine in all such colleges/universities imparting Architectural education.

The field of electronics is the fastest growing and the most rapidly changing area of technology in the current times. Electronics has become the all-pervasive technology, which finds application in all spheres of engineering including computers, communication, defense, mechatronics, instrumentation, automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, computer networks, satellites, education etc. The use of electronics has brought about a drastic change in the way human civilization exists today.

The department is currently focused on providing B.Tech. & M.Tech. programs which cover exhaustively the area of Electronics & Communication Engineering:

The field of communication has benefited significantly because of the growth of electronics technology. Currently it is possible to communicate using computers and mobile phones across cities, deserts, and oceans via satellites orbiting in space but there is more to come. Latest technologies in the communication field are entirely dependent on the field of electronics.

The Department of Electronics & Communication engineering has been set up to impart training of the highest standards to the students, in the field of electronics, thus preparing them to meet the exacting demands of the highly competitive global industrial market.

Training Methodology

The emphasis of the program is on practical, hands-on learning. Significant part of the curriculum is dedicated to ensuring that the students get to work with latest equipment and explore the implementation of the knowledge learnt through the class-work. Besides regular class-work, skills of the students are honed by their participation in group discussions, presentations, group assignments and project work which is mandatory 5th semester onwards. The students face continuous evaluation based on these activities. The students are also required to undergo summer training in an industrial environment to learn industrial standards of project management, teamwork, quality considerations and documentation.

Infrastructure

State-of-the-art laboratories, containing the latest equipment have been set up to ensure that the students get complete facilities to thoroughly understand and explore the concepts of electronics as learnt in the class-room. Specifically keeping in mind the fact that the University is located in a region where day-to-day industrial interaction is not feasible, the latest equipment is provided in the laboratories itself to ensure that the students are kept abreast of the newer technologies being used in the industry. The school has established laboratories in collaboration with Multi-national companies like Xilinx Inc., USA & Freescale Semiconductors Ltd., USA. The following laboratories have been established to provide the students with the best possible facilities for enhancing the value of the learning process:

Biotechnology continues to expand rapidly with new discoveries at a breathtaking pace. This industry, a merger of science and business, demands a multi-disciplinary workforce skilled in basic-research, product development, regulatory affairs and commercialization.

The biotechnology industry harnesses advances in molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics and nanotechnology to move discoveries and ideas out of the laboratory and into the product development pipeline. Students of B. Tech. (Biotechnology) learn to advance their careers by broadening their skill base and understanding of this dynamic field.

Recognizing this wider impact of biotechnology education and research in the 21st century, and the limitations of the existing programmes elsewhere in India, the University School of Biotechnology at SMVDU has placed due emphasis in the curriculum on interdisciplinary convergence in modern biology, engineering and technology, applied orientation, quantitative approach, practical training, awareness of the broader social, economic, environmental, ethical, legal and managerial issues in biotechnology. Some of the distinguishing features of the School include highly qualified faculty, in-house teaching, quality laboratory infrastructure for teaching and research, individual projects, good library, etc.
