20042018 Vikalp conducted

Vikalp- astudents’ initiative at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Katra organized three weeks English Proficiency Test and one week General Aptitude Test for students residing in nearby villages and rural areas. In this, around 50 students participated. After the learning was imparted, a test was conducted to evaluate their performance. All students participated with academic rigor and great enthusiasm.

Awards and certificates were distributed to excellent performers which included both merit and consolation prizes. Prof. Rajeev Garg, Head, School of Architecture and Landscape Design was the chief guest of the prize distribution ceremony. Vikalp 2017-18 (II semester) concluded with this ceremony.

20042018 Vikalp Alumni

Vikalp at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Katra observed its first alumni meet on the eve of Sixth Convocation, held on April 18, 2018. The meet was attended by ex-Vikalp Volunteers (passed out
students) from different schools and departments who with their unstinting efforts have always tried to
take this initiative to the next level. The Vikalp alumni meet was attended by Ms. Shivalika Singh, Ms. Priya Pandita, Ms. Shivani Bhardwaj, Ms. Anbu Mathika, Mr. Pradeep Verma, Mr. Yagyank Shrivastava, and Mr. Raj Kamal.

SMVDU Katra: Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sanjeev Jain honored SMVDU teams for winning medals in 2nd State Universities Championship hosted by University of Jammu. SMVDU players bagged a total of 4 medals including 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. In the women category, University grabbed 2nd position in Basketball. University team led by captain Charu defeated University of Kashmir in semifinal match. In Table Tennis women also University got 2nd position while in men they got 3rd position. Badminton women team of University also got 3rd position and claimed bronze medal in the mega sports event.

11042018 Eeshan S Srivasatava

SMVDU Katra: Eeshan S. Srivasatava, a Student of School of Architecture, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, won the 1st prize in National Level Birla White Yuva Ratna Students’ Design Competition organized by Aditya Birla Group for the students of Architecture Institutions of India. This Year Design brief focused around the design and development of proposed Entrance complex cum Plaza at Amravati. Mr. Eeshan submitted his proposal under the faculty mentorship of Ar. Anoop Sharma, which highlighted the Effective depiction of the interface between the river and the land, Clear segregation of vehicular and pedestrian movement at two different levels. The scale and form (Minimalistic Design) respond to the local culture, concept, welcoming sign to the visitors to the capital city, sustainability etc. translated the Amaravati culture through the built form. Pertinent to mention that Students from all across the country including various well established Architecture Schools participated in the National level competition. 

Mr. Eeshan was awarded cash Prize of Rs. 25,000/- in the Award Ceremony held at ‘The Lalit Mumbai’. Rajshree Birla was the chief guest of the Award Ceremony. Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Head of School of Architecture Prof. Rajeev Garg, Faculty Members and others have applauded the achievement of Mr. Eeshan.

SMVDU Katra: Mr. Karan Sapolia, a B.Tech. student of School of Computer Science and Engineering is selected for the Mozilla Open Leaders Program, which he has been pursuing remotely. The program will continue till May 18. It is a mentorship program wherein Mozilla a leading internet organization, which also ships the Firefox browser, mentors select participants towards making their software and open-source internet projects successful and transforming the participants into Open Source Leaders or 'Open Leaders' as they call it. The program is conducted twice every year, and this is the 5th edition of the program. Mr. Karan is selected along with 77 other project leaders from around the world.

SMVDU Katra: Sonalika International Tractors Ltd., a fastest growing Tractor Manufacturing Company, conducted a campus placement drive at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra for 2018 graduating students. A team of Technical and HR Panelists from Sonlaika Tractors conducted the selection process. After passing through a rigorous campus selection process consisting of Written Test, Group Discussion, Technical Interview and HR Interview, 6 students from SMVDU, namely Shadab Ali, Kumar Vaibhav, Ashish Ranjan, Sawan Kumar, Abhishek Kumar and Komal Sharma, were declared finally selected, reports Training and Placement Officer Mr. B.K. Bhatia. Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Jain congratulated all final selects and advised them to be sincere, hardworking and honest to their work after joining.

SMVDU Katra: Mr. Vimarsh Padha S/O Sh. Gulshan Kumar Padha, a resident of Suryavanshi Nagar, Jammu, and a student of School of Economics, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, has been awarded the prestigious Dr. V. V. Bhatt Memorial Research Fellowship at Economic and Political Weekly Research Foundation (EPWRF), Mumbai, for pursuing internship. The Internship has been named after the late Dr. V. V. Bhatt, a well-known Development Economist, who had served in the Reserve Bank of India and the Industrial Development Bank of India, and also in multilateral institutions such as the Asian Institute for Development and Planning, the World Bank and the Economic Development Institute. It is awarded only to one student across nation every year. As communicated through the letter dated 21 March 2018, from Dr. J. Dennis Rajakumar, Director of EPWRF, the fellowship will be for the period of 2 months and Mr. Vimarsh Padha will be entitled to monthly fellowship amount of Rs. 15000. He will be working under the supervision of a senior staff at EPWRF, Mumbai, during the above said period. Though undertaking assigned work, he will be encouraged to do research on a theme broadly in the area of Development Economics. Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain and the Head School of Economics Prof. Bandi Kamaiah congratulated Mr. Vimarsh Padha.


Professor Binod Kumar Kanaujia, an eminent professor and researcher, from School of Computational and Integrative Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and also an Adjunct Professor in School of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, visited SMVDU on 05th and 06th April 2018. He delivered a set of lectures and interacted with faculty, Staff, and students of School of Electronics and Communication Engineering.  Based on his expertise, Prof. Kanaujia gave detailed insight in the development in the field of Microwave and Antennas. In his concluding remarks, Prof. Kanaujia praised the teaching and laboratory engagement at SoECE. His stay in the School was a great learning experience for students and research scholars.

SMVDU Katra: Mr. Shourjo Chatterjee, Accountant General (A&E), Jammu & Kashmir, interacted with the MBA students of School of Business, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra on the topic ”Management in the Public Sector in India and Norway: Contrasts and Similarities”  on 28th March, 2018. Mr. Chatterjee shared his experiences of working in India and Norway and related it to different theories in respect of leadership, ethics, accountability, decision making etc. His session was very interactive and was well received by the students. Dr. Sushil Mehta, Head, School of Business, thanked Mr. Chatterjee.

Vedas are great source of scientific ideas: Prof. Shastri

SMVDU Katra: A One-Day National Seminar on ‘Vedic Sciences: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow’ held on 6 April at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. The organizer of the Seminar Dr. V.K. Tripathi, Head School of Philosophy & Culture, emphasized upon the need of working together to explore the Vedic Sciences to address contemporary problems. Prof. Vishva Murti Shastri, Chief Guest on the occasion, highlighted that Vedas are great source of scientific ideas and they are the source of various scientific discipline such as language science, phonology, grammatology, cosmology, semiotics, social sciences, governance and knowledge theories. He extensively dwelt upon interpretation of Vedic Symbolism, meaning of hymns, meaning of science, environmental concerns in the Vedas, and need connecting the Vedic wisdom to the contemporary curricula. He also spoke on the Vedangas: siksha, kalpa, nirukta, vyakarana, chhanda and jyotish. He interestingly explained the motto of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University – Vigyanam Brahma. Vigyana – the science is best cauterized in terms its creativity and the Brahma also means - that creates, that expends. And with these insights the two terms are connected.

Dr. Rajeev Garg, Head, School of Architecture & Landscape Design spoke on ‘An overview on the quest for research in Vedic Sciences’; Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Asst. Prof. School of Biotechnology spoke on ‘Ayurveda and life style diseases’; Dr. Bhupendra Heera, Lecturer, GHSS, Panthal spoke on Mystery and meaning of Vastu in the   ancient Vedic and Post-Vedic literature’; Dr. Amitabh Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages & Literature spoke on ‘Nirukta’. Komal Sharma, Nitika Singh, Manisha Devi also delivered their talks on various issues like workplace spirituality and Vedic Mathematics. The seminar concluded with a symposium in which scholars from Rashtriya Sanskrit Santhan, Kot Bhalwal, Jammu, namely Dr. Ghanshyam Mishra, Dr. Krishna Murari Mani Tripathi, Dr. D. Dayanath participated. Dr. Narayan Prasad Bhattarai from SMVD Gurukul, Charan Paduka, spoke on the impact of Vedic chanting. The symposium was chaired by Prof. Shiv Nirmohi. Dr. Anil K. Tewari, Asst. Prof. SOPC, conducted the sessions and delivered vote of thanks.

SMVDU Researcher Scores Outstanding Grade in GIAN Course

SMVDU Katra: Adishree Vats, Research Student, School of Languages & Literature, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University attended "11- Day GIAN Course" on "A History of Oppression: Causes and Consequences,"and scored outstanding (O-Grade) in the course, organized by NALSAR University, Hyderabad, from 19 th - 29 th March, 2018.

Prof. Gyorgy Konczei, ELTE University, Budapest (Hungary), founder of “Disability Studies" and the former member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Switzerland, was the keynote speaker of the course. He introduced participants to the various faces of oppression, and further acquainted them with the role of gender, race, class, mythology and philosophy in creating a non-supportive environment, with special reference to social, physical and intellectual disabilities prevailing in Hungary, America, Africa and India. Further, Dr. Neha Pathakji, course coordinator provided insights on disability studies. Adishree is working with Dr. Anurag Kumar and Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi. The course benefitted her in updating the current knowledge of her research area and enhanced her creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Volunteers registered for VIKALP – a students’ initiative at SMVDU have been doing a substantial job since the onset of these initiatives in the university. These students realize their social responsibility and try their best to offer it to the destitute and needy. Despite hectic academic schedule, volunteers at Vikalp reach to fulfil their duties towards the society. They are the real life heroes in the lives of those they have helped and still helping. Their efforts cannot be paid in pennies and pounds but have already gathered a lot of love and goodwill. They realize that every drop of their sweat will go towards the nation building as they are engaged in giving basic education to the under-privileged children of nearby places.

This is to acknowledge the unstinting efforts put forward by Mr. Abhishek Agrawal(17bcs003), pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering along with Mr. Keshav Gupta(17bcs029), pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering along with Mr. Punit Batra(17bcs042), pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering along with Ms. Smiksha Gupta(17bec055), pursuing B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering as the best volunteers of Vikalp for the month of March 2018. They were responsible, rendering overall counselling, lessons on general health and hygiene, and imparting basic education to the children. As freshers they participated in every initiative taken forward and are still offering commendable services. Vikalp family extends their cordial gratitude towards these volunteers and wish them the very best for all future endeavours. We also wish that they can inspire other students and take this altruistic effort to the next level.

SMVDU Katra: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University participated in the All India University (AIU) Kick boxing Championship organized by Punjabi University, Patiala which was inaugurated on 18 th  March 2018 and final match was played on 21 st  March, 2018. SMVDU team participated and bagged two bronze medals. It was a knock out tournament. In 74Kg weight category, Mr. Sahil Pandita on 19 th  & 20 th  March defeated his opponents and won the Bronze medal. Similarly, in
64Kg weight our Player Mr. Rahul won the bronze medal by defeating his rival of Assam University. Total five students participated from the University. The coaching for kick boxing was provided by Cp. Sucha Singh, Sports Coach and Mr. Sumit Sharma.

SMVDU April 05, 2018 Katra: Ms. Subah Gautam and Ms. Akanksha Badyal, Researchers at School of Languages and Literature, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University attended a Two-day International Seminar on ‘The Future of Humanities: Challenges and Prospects’ organized by Department of English, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (30th-31st March, 2018). Ms. Subah Gautam, working with Dr. Anruag Kumar, presented her paper titled “Sita in a new avatar; Reconstructing the Image of Sita in Amish’s Sita-Warrior of Mithila”, whereas Ms. Akanksha Badyal, working with Dr. Anurag Kumar and Dr. Amitabh V Dwivedi, expressed her views on “An Epistemic Voyage of the Downtrodden in the Regional Minority Narrative”. More than 200 selected delegates attended the seminar across the country and abroad. The seminar addressed the fundamental question: Is Humanities really in crisis and, if so, what are the reasons, and the solution to the crisis? Ms. Subah and Ms. Akanksha Badyal are pursuing their research in the School of Languages and Literature, at SMVD University in the area of Indian Mythology and Post feminism respectively.

Natraj Natya Kunj, Jammu in collobaration with Shri Vaishno Devi University Katra today performed Nationally acclaimed Hindustani play “Gagan Damama Bajyo” written by Piyush Mishra under the direction of Abhishek Bharti at Matrika Auditorium SMVDU Katra. This play is based on the life and ideology of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. The play highlights the fact that, though the British rule had ended, yet another form of tyranny has begun. For the common man, only the rule has changed but their exploitation and harassment have not ended. The play traces the relevance of Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s ideology in the present scenario. The play raises a question- ‘Is this India is “THE INDIA” of Bhagat Singh’s dream?’

The play starts in 1965 in Delhi where Battukeshwar Dutt, a comrade, is hospitalized and Markand Trivedi asks him “Is today’s India is really the India of Bhagat Singh’s dream”. The story of play then goes in flashback to 1921 and ends in 1994 in Kanpur, where Shiv Verma, another comrade, is alive. “Gagan Damama Bajyo” highlights the ideological learning of Bhagat Singh and also tries to project his thinking pattern. Director of the play, very creatively portrayed prototype of socio- political scene of Modern India against the background of Bhagat Singh’s Martyrdom.

What made “Gagan Damama Bajyo” a class act, was its superb presentation, grilled with excellent acting by the participating crew which includes - Akshay Razdan, Kanav Sharma, Amandeep Sharma, Abhishek Sharma, Mukesh Bakshi, Rakesh Dogra, Niharika Shakshi, Neha Bhat, Karan Mehra, Manik Sharma, Surbhi Balgotra, Abbas Ali Alikoo, Tejan Bharti, & Manpreet Kour. Sets were designed by Kanwar Iqbal, Lights by Pankaj Sharma, Make-Up by Manoj Dhamir Shammi, Music by Surinder Singh Manhas, Choreography by Romit Sawhney, Photography - Third Eye and hall Management by Hema Shivgotra, Shubhangi Dhamir, Vishal Pandita, Dipshi Mahajan. The melodious songs were sung by Surinder Singh Manhas, Nirbhay Singh Salathia, Marina Manhas & Monika Sharma. Show was hosted by Safeer Hussain.

At the end, Dr. Varun Tripathi Dean Philosophy and Culture thanked the audience for their support.

SMVDU April, 5th: An extension lecture by Prof. Anita Singh, Professor at Banaras Hindi University (BHU), Varanasi, was organized by the School of Languages and Literature on 5th April 2018 where Prof. Singh gave an insightful lecture on Indian Feminism wrt to Post Modernism. At the end of the session, she interacted with the students who appreciated her deliberations and discussion. Incidentally, Prof. Singh was at SMVDU to conduct the PhD Viva Voce of Ms Simran Preet Kaur, Research Student of the School. The PhD Viva Voce of the Research student was well appreciated by Prof Singh and the in-house committee members as well as the research proves to be a valuable asset on the modeling of agency in Hindi Cinema. Dr. Vandana Sharma, supervisor of the respective research student was also present as a member of the committee. Dr Varun Kumar Tripathi, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences presented a token of appreciation to Prof Singh. Dr. Amitabh Vikram Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages and Literature congratulated Ms. Simran Preet Kaur and thanked Prof Singh for such a thought provoking conglomeration of thoughts.
