Vice President of India addresses Fourth Convocation

The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari addressed the fourth convocation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in the Matrika Auditorium on 8th February, 2014. Jenab Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minsiter of J&K and Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Hon’ble Union Minister, New and Renewable Energy were Guests of Honor. Hon’ble Governor of J&K Sh. N.N. Vohra and Chancellor SMVDU declared the convocation open. Prof. Sudhir K. Jain, Vice Chancellor of the university gave highlights of the university activities, research and infrastructure development in his report. A total of 751 students were awarded degrees. students were awarded with the Chancellor’s Gold Medal, Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medal, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Award for Excellence and the University Silver Medal.

In his convocation address, Sh. Ansari said that the funding of the University by the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine Board is a particularly welcome initiative. It emulates similar initiatives elsewhere in the country. The Vice President said that creating a responsible citizenry is a task which cannot be left only to the government. It needs to begin at the school level. Education should reaffirm our commitment to the concept of equality amidst diversity. It must promote values that foster justice, peace, humaneness and tolerance in a multi-cultural society. These values, imbued with a scientific temper, creativity and curiosity amongst our young, can be inculcated and carried forth in primary, middle and senior school levels and beyond it to college and university. This endeavour would also require the cooperation and support of parents, guardians and the wider community. Asking the passing out graduates and post-graduates from the higher institutions of learning and universities to venture in the new phase of their life with confidence, resolve and firm belief of making their mark in the fields they choose for career.

The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah advised the degree holders to be fully prepared to face challenges and bring laurels to all they belong.“You have been fully imparted education and skills and you have to prove your calibre and mettle to shine-bright your parents, your Institutions and your State”, he told the students He further stated that that higher learning institutions and universities provide opportunity of excellence to the students, facilitate them in all respects of gaining knowledge and igniting their quest, but at the end of the day it is up to the students to exhibit their brilliance and calibre by contributing positively to the society and the nation. The Chief Minister said that SMVDU in its young age has made remarkable strides and is emerging as one of the renowned universities in the Country. “The students getting education in this university are also having mind-blowing and thought-provoking natural surroundings and environment befitting for an educational institution. You should take full advantage of the faculty, facility and environment to excel and grow both educationally and as the fine human beings”, he said and appreciated the efforts of the University for its continuous progress and growth in the shortest period of time.

While addressing Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah said that the economic development of any country depends on the quality of its human resources and the skilled manpower base which is developed through the effective education system. He said higher educational institutions and universities go a long way in fulfilling this objective. He said that investment in education sector is the key to people’s empowerment, progress and prosperity.

Congratulating the passing-out students of the Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) in his address on the occasion of 4th Convocation of the University, the Union Minister impressed upon the passing out students to utilise the knowledge acquired and skills gained for the benefit of the society and the country.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah who was guest of honour at the Convocation said that multi-stream SMVDU imparts education in a wide range of research-oriented cutting edge programmes. He said the University has created a strong edifice of higher learning and nurturing the competent human resource to lead in all fields of life.The Union Minister stressed on the quality and quantity aspects of higher education and said “we need many more universities to meet the requirements of higher education”. He said that standards of higher education need to be continuously improved to make universities world class seats of learning and innovations in teaching and research fields.The Union Minister referred to the need for mitigating the challenges of global warming and said that there is crucial need for promoting the use of renewable energy and called for undertaking the required research for this purpose in the educational institutions.

Registrar of the university Ms. Roop Avtar Kaur led the academic procession where in all members of Executive Council, Academic Council, CEO Shrine Board, Dr. Mandeep Bhandari , Prinipal Secretary to Hon’ble Governor Sh. Naveen Choudhary and senior faculty members of the university participated. Prof. V. Verma, Dean College of Sciences was the convocation coordinator for the fourth convocation. Members of Legislative Council and other prominent officers from different organs of the state machinery participated in the event.
