National Seminar in Mathematical Sciences inaugurated

A National Seminar on Recent trends in Mathematical Sciences was inaugurated at Shri Mata vaishno Devi University by Prof. V. K. Bhat, Director, School of Mathematics & Dean College of Sciences on 22.03.2013. The Seminar is organised by School of Mathematics, SMVDU and is sponsored by UGC. Prof. Bhat conveyed good wishes from Prof. Sudhir. K. Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University to all the participants for a successful Seminar. He recalled the contribution of great Mathematicians like Hilbert, Weyl, Gauss, Ramanujan etc to Mathematics. He highlighted the contribution of Emmy Noether (a German Mathematician) to theoretical Physics. He also highlighted the applications of Mathematics in Chemistry, Computer science and other branches of Science.

Prof. P. K. Jain, Former Head, Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi said that Mathematics is merely not a subject but a foundation of all Sciences. He also gave a brief about the application of Analysis to other areas of Mathematics.

Prof. B. S. Panda, (IIT Delhi) highlighted the importance of Discrete Mathematics in Computer science, Mechanical Engineering and other related areas.

Prof. S. D. Sharma, Head, Department of Mathematics, Central University, Jammu highlighted the relation of Mathematics to art and poetry.

Dr. A. K. Das, Convenor of the Seminar gave a brief about the Seminar and welcomed all the participants. He also conducted the proceedings.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Surender Singh.Approximately 120 delegates from SMVD University, IIT’s, Universities and Post graduate Colleges participated in the Seminar.
